The suspect who was arrested on the weekend after he allegedly raped and killed a dog in Doornkop, Mpumalanga, was denied bail in the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The suspect is not 17-years-old as previously reported, but is in fact 20-years-old.
He was arrested under the Animal Protection Act for bestiality and torturing of an animal after a four month old puppy was found dead at a house, Middleburg Observer reported.
Middelburg police spokesperson Captain Kanyisile Zwane said the man was visiting his girlfriend when the alleged incident occurred.
Zwane added neighbours told police they discovered him asleep, still wearing a condom. The lifeless body of the four-month-old dog was found next to him.
“Police gave the carcass of the dog to the SPCA personnel who then took it to veterinarian Dr Charmaine van der Linde for a post-mortem,” said Zwane.
The condom has since been sent to the police’s forensics department for DNA testing.
Senior Inspector Petro Oberholzer conducted tests on the blood found on the condom while a postmortem on the dog is underway.
The suspect was denied bail and the case postponed to February 1 for a formal bail application.
