American Desperado by Jon Roberts and Evan Wright (Ebury), R195. ISBN: 9780091945220 - The book takes the reader into the blackest, ugliest recesses of human brutality.

Choosing military service in Vietnam to escape prison, he committed atrocities against civilians with impunity and indeed with the connivance of the military leadership.

Returning from Vietnam, he plunged into drug smuggling. Ultimately trapped  and facing a lifetime in prison, he was allowed a plea bargain, resulting in only three years in jail.

In this book, the unspeakable is spoken, with frankness and indifference. What is equally chilling is that when Roberts attends a big sports match, he is hailed as a celebrity.

The book may be a good case study for criminologists or have some dark entertainment value.
