Daniel my brother – The family album - Retro influences

Long a popular fixture in the South African music scene (he’s played drums for eVoid, Petit Cheval, Electric Petals and Wonderboom, and has fronted side projects such as Made In Wrong Kong and The Lowveld Garage Band), Danny De Wet now presents another seven-member project called Daniel My Brother.

7/10 DANIEL MY BROTHER – THE FAMILY ALBUM (OTT)

De Wet is the singer, frontman and songwriter this time around, and his experience in all facets of the industry (and the band) ensures that these tunes have qualities that should give them durability.

De Wet’s is not a classic singer’s voice, being rather of the Robert Smith/punk school, and his songwriting style recalls the era – the Seventies and Eighties – in which those influences enjoyed their heydays.

The lyrics are clever in an accessible, non-elitist way (see Fun Into Funeral); the arrangements feature enthusiastic, tight, garage band-style playing, and there are a number of radio-friendly options for playlisters to make use of.

Maybe/Gravity, The Hook and Family are among the highlights. – BD
