Making your mark as a solo performer requires having a standout characteristic, and Hugo Nieuwoudt simply doesn’t.

5/10 HUGO NIEUWOUDT – WANT JY GLO IN MY (IAN BOSSET)

He’s a capable singer, with a strong, pleasant voice, but Want Jy Glo In My is a uniformly generic-sounding collection that fades far too easily into the background.

A number of different songwriters have contributed work, including Lize Beekman (the chirpy Kersfees & Verjaarsdae) and producer Werner Beukes (a number of different tunes, including Altyd Teen My Hou and Won’t Be Alone).

Whoever sorts out the royalties will thus have an interesting time, but that can’t be said of folk listening to this album – whatever the provenance of the songs, they all sound the same, unfortunately. – BD
