Like the introduction of a best-selling novel or the first paragraph of a groundbreaking story, an album’s first track has to grab your attention unequivocally.

9½/10 ZAKI IBRAHIM – EVERY OPPOSITE (MOTIF)

Ibrahim’s Draw The Line does just that. With its lounge music feel and perfect use of effects (like flanging), it is a deeply moving dance  track with contemplative lyrics.

On it, she discusses where she draws the line when it comes to governments and favours.

She slows the tempo down on Everything so that you can focus on the messages of hope and upliftment she is expressing, with the aid of dubstep beats and traditional chants.

Most of the tracks on Every Opposite confirm that Ibrahim is a phenomenal vocalist, but it is on songs like The Brave Ones, Something In The Water, Black And Grey and Heart Beat where listeners get to appreciate her storytelling abilities.

She uses profound lyrics to conjure up images that remain with you for a while.

Ibrahim is sublime on Flux Capacitator and even more so on Kids Are Talking, tracks that are slightly spooky,  but in a good way.

Her use of disco, soulful pop, elements of rap and reggae ensure that she  impresses lovers of all of these genres. – SM
