CD Review - Ambient soundscapes

A much-vaunted talent, Grimes (real name Claire Boucher) is more about atmospherics than she is about songs per se, making the buzz about her a little difficult to understand.

3/10 GRIMES – VISIONS (JUST)

In effect, she sounds more like a guest vocalist on a track by Martin Solveig or similar rather than a frontline performer in her own right.

That she’s pitching herself as a purveyor of ambient soundscapes is seemingly confirmed by the track titles on this collection, which include Infinite Without Fulfillment; Oblivion; Circumambient; Vowels = Space And Time and Colour Of Moonlight (Antiochus).

The problem is, while those and other titles suggest a wide range of ideas, the music itself doesn’t and you’d have to be paying very close attention to distinguish one track from another most of the time.

Be A Body is perhaps the track offering the most distinguishable structure, but even that would make more sense as the backtrack at a trendy art exhibition more than it would as a self- sufficient piece of work.

There aren’t enough beats to make this work as dancefloor filler, but perhaps Visions could fill a vibe-setting gap prior to going out. – BD
