Myth busted

That made me think that South Africa has three major urban legends.
The first is about how bad the state of our economy is.
My guess is if you asked most people if they could tell you how the inflation rate is calculated most would have no clue, but they know that “the economy is bad”.
They only say this because everyone else says so.
The second myth is when anything goes wrong in our country then the ANC has a way to blame it on apartheid. I know they only say this because everyone else says so.
There is no proof of this.
The third is the most annoying.
Whenever someone achieves something, like winning a golf tournament, then they say it was inspired by Nelson Mandela.
I don’t have to guess about this one. It has become fashionable to attribute everything good to this man.
An analogy is to be found in the Bible. Moses was chosen by God to lead his people to the promised land.
When he came down from the mountain he found his people praying to a man-made god.
Moses had to plead with God not to punish his people for turning against him.
My fear is that while we are on our way to our very own promised non-racial, non-sexist democracy, too many people have made their own man-made gods.
We don’t have a Moses to plead with God to forgive us for our stupidity, but I do know that if this letter appears in The Citizen then it must be because Madiba got my Internet to work.
