Unions outmoded as mines turn to mechanisation

With all the labour unrest it can only be a matter of time before the miners say “enough is enough” and turn to mechanising the industry.

This model has been introduced to farming, formerly highly labour-intensive, with great success.

If mines embark on this strategy unemployment will be much higher.

So,  the answer is to attach productivity incentives to any wage increase. Work harder, measure the increase and remunerate accordingly.

But can one see the workforce accepting that increases are now linked to an increase in productivity? The NUM and Cosatu never.

It smacks of capitalism.
