JOHANNESBURG - "When the bull that is thought to have been responsible for the Anthony Swatton incident reappeared in his garden on Sunday, the animal was captured and removed by Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal wildlife's game capture team," it said in a statement.

The sedated animal was hoisted into a crate and was taken to the bomas at the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi park's game capture centre. It would be sold to a private buyer.

"Visitors are reminded that while the prevalence of wildlife in the village is one of its most popular characteristics and greatest attractions, care must always be taken to stay out of the way of any wild animal," said iSimangaliso Park operations director Herbert Mthembu.

"Hippo in particular can be aggressive when cornered, threatened or separated from water."

Swatton, who is an Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal wildlife employee, was attacked at his home on Thursday, when he went outside to see why his dog was barking.

The hippo bit his left leg and flung him aside before its tusk pierced his abdomen.

He is in a serious condition in the intensive care unit of a nearby hospital.
