JOHANNESBURG -  Zuma, accompanied by Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane and Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, said that the government project which seeks to bring about basic services in Kanana would restore the dignity of those living there.

It was Zuma’s second visit to the region, following his first visit to the nearby informal settlement of Sweetwaters in 2010. He promised residents that basic services will be delivered to the area, including nearby informal settlements.

“I was counting the parks, and seeing the electrification of streets, so everything is coming. I like this thing... you know, it brings dignity,” said Zuma.

The City of Johannesburg in cooperation with the provincial government, then embarked on a housing project which sought to develop the area. The project also seeks to incorporate the informal settlements of  Thulamntwana, Doornkuil, Bhekaphambili, including Sweetwaters.

A total of 3  101 houses were being built, 1 793 of which are government subsidised housing units, 756 social rental units and 552 bonded houses.

In addition, plans to erect several parks, two sports grounds, two primary schools, one high school, a clinic and commercial and light industrial sites are afoot.
