Motaung and Theledi were both released on R50 000 bail and will appear again on October 15. Both accused implied that they would plead not guilty at their next court appearance.
Motaung and Theledi are partners in the property development company Lefika Emerging Equity Pty (Ltd), which is implicated in a scandal surrounding the awarding of a tender from the Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM) in 2006 to manage the Mbombela Stadium.
Motaung, who was arrested earlier, arrived late on Wednesday afternoon and entered the Nelspruit police station through the front door after 7pm and, according to police sources, spent the night in holding cells.
During the bail application it transpired that Theledi, after reading about his imminent arrest in national media reports, willingly handed himself over to the police.
According to spokesman for the Hawks, Colonel McIntosh Polela, Christian Grib, the former chief financial officer of Lefika, was arrested in Cape Town during the week and is in custody.
Protestors sang “Dubula u Bobby”, meaning “Shoot Bobby”, in front of the court and waved placards that read, “Bobby, who killed Jimmy?”, while some sported ANC T-shirts with a photograph of slain former MLM speaker, Jimmy Mohlala.
His murder was mentioned by State prosecutor Advocate Nkuna, who pointed out that Mohlala’s signature had allegedly been forged and this had presumably led to his murder.
This statement was objected to by Theledi’s legal counsel, who said that the prosecutors should stay within the confines of the draft charge sheet presented in court.
