Alien invasion not under way

Joburgers can rest assured that no alien invasion is under way as the mystery behind the “strange” green lights over the northern parts of the city has been solved.

Images that went viral on social networks show green circular shapes of light moving across the Alexandra night sky last week, with more reports from the Fourways area on Monday night.

However, it turns out the “light show” was a promotion for the Cartoon Network’s new show Ben 10 Omniverse.

The website for the South African Coalition of Omnipresent Extra-Terrestrial Life counting down to an “unconfirmed encounter with aliens” was part of the hype around the show.

Johannesburg Planetarium officials immediately ruled out extraterrestrial activity when presented with images of the green lights. “High-powered green laser pointers for sky-watching are readily available,” said spokesman Claire Flanagan.
