SA Revenue Service (SARS) spokesman Adrian Lackay yesterday confirmed that immovable assets belonging to Malema had been attached. “We got a court order and we are now interested in auctioning the properties to recover the revenues owed,” Lackay said.

Assets to be auctioned did not include a farm and properties in Polokwane. Asked to disclose the value of Malema’s assets to be auctioned, Lackay said: “You will have to see what the proceeds are at the end of the auction.”

Malema’s lawyer, Tumi  Mokwena, said he had no knowledge about immovable properties to be auctioned. “I am acting on his be half on the sequestration application,” Mokwena said.

Items to be sold on auction include Malema’s piano, CD players, television sets, DVDs and fridges, among others. The auction is an attempt by SARS to recover more than R16 million which Malema owes it in tax arrears.

Malema had until February 18 to notify SARS whether he intended to oppose the application or not. He is said to have missed the deadline.

The former youth league leader was dealt a blow this week when Brian Kahn Attorneys said they were no longer representing him.
