Leopards are on the prowl
13 July 2012 | NEVILLE KHOZA
Lidoda Duvha host Sudan’s Al-Merreikh at Coca-Cola Park tomorrow afternoon, with Sunday Chidzambwa’s men needing to overturn a 3-2 deficit to reach the group stages.
The country’s only representative in the Caf competition, Leopards need just a win to see them through to the group stages.
A one goal win will leave both level on 3-3 aggregate, but will see the South African side advance courtesy of the away goals rule.
Monama said confidence is high in the team and that they know what to expect in this game.
“We are confident of going past them in the second leg this weekend,” he says.
“I don’t think they will pose much of a threat because we now know how they play.
“They caught us off guard when we play away, our mindset was not right,” Monama said.
Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has praised Leopards for their impressive run in the Confederation Cup so far.
Igesund also said it will be easy for him as a national team coach if the PSL players venture more in the African continent to gain more experience with their clubs.
“They campaigned here while still fighting for relegation last season, and we need to applaud them for that,” said Igesund.
“Our players don’t realise the importance and the harsh realities of playing in Africa.
“It gives the country a chance to understand how to play on the continent,” he said.
“We need to change our mindset on these competitions. Leopards are leading by example, and we need to set the standards.
“When players are called up to the national team, they will come carrying experience of having played in Africa,” Igesund said.
This was the case when Orlando Pirates, who were eliminated at the first hurdle of the competition this years, won the Caf African Champions League in 1995.
Bafana Bafana also went to win the Africa Cup of Nations the following year with most of the players coming from the Pirates team.
