Downs look to end drought

For the past four seasons, Sundowns have not been able to turn their wealth into tangible results in the form of adding trophies to their Chloorkop cabinet.
Instead, The Brazilians would spend the greater part of the previous campaigns showing glimpse of a bright future but fail to be consistent until the end.
Against Chiefs, this Sunday, Johan Neeskens’ men are hoping to make this MTN8 to catapult their season of redemption in the local football landscape as they have now become an expensive side which greatly underachieves.
Playing at home at Loftus, Sundowns should not find it hard to beat Chiefs having already made good signings in their attacking line unlike Chiefs who have bolstered their team greatly in defence.
Neeskens’ new squad members include highly-rated Edward Manqele and Eleazar Rodgers who both were amongst the top scorers in the league last season while Chiefs only signed little known Kingston Nkatha from Black Leopards and Siyabonga Nkosi.
Chiefs’ signings do not evoke any fear to any defence as those of Sundowns do. This present the expected domination Sundowns should have over Chiefs.
“The bottom line is year-in and year-out the expectation is that Sundowns must do well, but the standard of football in South Africa is high,” Sundowns assistant coach Harold Legodi said this week.
“We come with a positive mind into the new season and we will perform to the best of our ability on Sunday. Hopefully we will do well,” he added.
But Sundowns have had a lot of near-misses and whether they could out-muscle a Chiefs side known to have a knack of rising to the occasion in cup competitions would make it hard for you to assume a Chiefs loss is possible.
With Siphiwe Tshabalala a doubtful starter for Chiefs as he is struggling from an ankle injury, Amakhosi are likely to have it hard to impose themselves without the influential presence of Tshabalala.
The match starts at 3pm.
