Obada targets titles

The Nigerian midfielder hopes the switch from a coastal club to an inland outfit will help his medal count improve from nothing to at least one by the end of this season.
“Yes, I have been playing in South Africa for something like five years now and have not won a trophy,” he said. “This must get better as now I am at a team where a medal is very possible.”
Obada’s Swallows made a good start to their campaign with a win in MTN8 competition over AmaZulu last Sunday.
They expect that form to be carried into their first match of the 2012/13 Absa Premiership season when they face Platinum Stars at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace at 3pm on Sunday.
The trip to North West is one Obada also hopes to use to put himself in pole position as Swallows coach Zeca Marques’ preferred right wing as he is competing with Joseph Makhanya and Oscar Machapa for the position.
“I think I did well last week against AmaZulu and it should not be difficult for the coach to select me even though the competition is quite tough for the position,” he added.
The former Thanda Royal Zulu player said the spirit which exists in the Dube Birds camp gives him a strong belief the squad can annex some silverware this season.
“Of course, the guys are united here. They support each other in every way. We are like a family and that should put us in a very good position to earn something,” he said.
Swallows made no wholesale changes to the team which finished second to champions Orlando Pirates last season. And interestingly, Obada has been their only acquisition for the new campaign.
But former Pirates and SuperSport United forward Katlego Mashego has been on trial at the club for the past two weeks alongside Obada’s former team-mate at Maritzburg, Diyo Sibisi.
Sibisi has since stopped training with Swallows as it looks like he will not be signed. But Mashego seems to have caught Marques’ eye and the former Bafana Bafana player is set to be offered a deal.
“I like him and I will recommend we sign him but all the other details like his salary will be discussed by our CEO, Leon Prins,” the coach said.
