Sundowns keep tabs on Parker
20 August 2012 | MZWAKHE NGWENYA
The Mamelodi Sundowns defence will be out to nullify his influence in the Kaizer Chiefs frontline when the teams meet tomorrow at FNB Stadium in a PSL match.
Parker will be a marked man simply because he scored four fabulous goals for Amakhosi in the Premiership when they beat AmaZulu 6-0 two weeks ago.
With Sundowns using a makeshift defence in their last two matches, you would wonder if the Tshwane side are able to shut down the supply to Parker.
Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens has persisted in using midfielder Esrom Nyandoro in central defence for the Brazilians in their games against Chippa United and Moroka Swallows.
Neeskens made the decision despite having natural defenders in his squad.
Against Swallows in the MTN8 semifinal on Saturday night, the Dutchman seemed to have realised his error as Nyandoro struggled to keep Swallows at bay and Clayton Daniels replaced the Zimbabwean.
Now facing a Chiefs team brimming with confidence and buoyed by their pursuit of revenge, Neeskens is likely not to opt for Nyandoro in defence when they visit the iconic venue tomorrow evening.
Given Parker’s heroics against AmaZulu in Durban, Neeskens cannot afford to rely on a temporary line-up – especially in his rearguard. Parker’s aiming to return to the national team and against Sundowns, the former FC Twente marksman will be out to prove the four he scored against Usuthu was no fluke.
Under new coach Stuart Baxter, Chiefs have yet to find consistency in their play since the start of the season.
It may be early days, but their 4-1 loss at the hands of Sundowns in the MTN8 quarterfinal made Baxter look like he will not take the team to greater heights, but those thoughts were quashed by the team’s 6-0 victory over AmaZulu.
The Briton is under pressure to convert results into silverware for Chiefs after they failed to win a single trophy last season under Serbian Vladimir Vermezovic.
The match starts at 7.30pm.
