Marques hails his Birds after Cup triumph

JOHANNESBURG - And that the Wafa Wafa win is the beginning of great things to come for the Soweto club.
The Dube Birds coach said that the 2-1 win over SuperSport United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night was proof that Swallows are coming out of their shell after not having tasted a cup triumph in 33 years.
“We deserved the trophy we won,” said Marques.
“Our win has proved what we are capable of.
“I believe that we are on a par with all the other teams when it comes to the quality of the players we have and the win is a positive step to what we aspire to achieve in the future.”
Giorgi Nergadze and Bennet Chenene won the R8-million for Swallows after scoring the goals after Franklyn Cale had given SuperSport United the lead.
Gavin Hunt’s United had an encouraging start, but, like wine, Swallows matured during the game and the further it went the better their display became.
United’s enterprising start and their good understanding made it easy for them to trouble Swallows, especially in the opening stages of the encounter.
Sameegh Doutie, Cale and Mark Haskins were the main pillars of the Tshwane-side’s flowing game.
Hunt, though, looked to have made a blunder by snubbing George Maluleka for the match with the player only coming in as a substitute late in the match.
Maluleka has been of the instrumental figures in the team’s good run in this competition and his absence was made conspicuous by the lack of creativity in United’s engine room.
“George was sick before the match and I had to start him from the bench,” was how Hunt explained his decision.
“It was unfortunate for us to lose this match. It is our first loss in 21 games.
“These things happen in football.”
