CSA intent on resolving GCB’s crisis

Cricket South Africa (CSA) have lent their support to beleaguered affiliate, the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) as the body continues to lurch from one off-field crisis to the next.

JOHANNESBURG - The national authority has decided to step in on the impasse reached between one of the GCB’s constituents, the Alexandra Cricket Club (ACC), and a group of disillusioned former members of the club by playing a leading role in resolving the dispute.

ACC were suspended as a club under the GCB’s jurisdiction last week as a measure to get them to discuss their differences with the disgruntled group but Alexandra insist that the groups’ approach of the Johannesburg Sports Council amounts to political interference.

Instead, they decided to invoke Article 30 of the GCB’s articles of association that pertains to dispute resolution, which by extension has meant that the club’s suspension has been lifted until the matter is laid to rest.

As a result, CSA will appoint an independent mediator to resolve the dispute.

“CSA is fully committed to providing the GCB with any resources that they might require to resolve the challenges facing them,” said acting president Willie Basson, an instrumental figure during the Langa Commission that placed the GCB under administration.

His words come at an interesting juncture after The Citizen reported earlier this week that some of the GCB directors had actually pleaded to the governing body to consider placing them under administration again.

However, at the moment the GCB is still intent on regaining its autonomy.

A special general meeting has been called for October 15 where a newly drafted but controversial constitution will be proposed for acceptance.

The widespread reluctance by the GCB’s constituents though to embrace certain clauses such as an equal voting system has hampered their efforts to call an annual general meeting where a new executive will also be elected.
