The Proteas take on Pakistan at the Wanderers Stadium today in the first of three Tests.
Mbalula said Smith had showed great talent, duty and patriotism over the years since taking over the captaincy at a young age.
“We wish him good luck for the Test and hope that his feat will inspire the next generation of South Africans,” he said.
Smith, who will turn 32 and celebrate his 100th Test as captain in the first Test against Pakistan today has been at the forefront of some of South Africa’s greatest performances. Nicknamed Biff by his teammates, Smith’s efforts as captain have seen the side rise to the ICC’s No 1 ranking twice.
He said the highlight of his career so far has been the back-to-back Test victories against Australia and England in the last few years.
Smith was a surprise choice as South African captain in March 2003 at the age of 22.
He became the youngest captain in South Africa’s cricket history and described the achievement of being appointed as a proud and nervous moment in his life.
“I thank the senior players in the squad at the time, especially Shaun Pollock who helped me through the initial period,” he said.
As he heads into the second half of his career, Smith hopes to play in another Cricket World Cup and win it. Over the past few days Smith has received messages from fans around the world congratulating him on his achievements.
He also received well wishes from South African Football Association president Kirsten Nematandani and Bafana Bafana.
