One prez, one wife

For example, compared with the US$2-billion loan facility offered to the IMF, the R15.5 million used for presidential “spousal support” in 2009/10 is a drop in the ocean.
However, it is double what was spent annually during the Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe terms.
In addition, a government that claims to prioritise poverty alleviation should not give the appearance of conspicuous consumption.
Hence the call by some ANC Eastern Cape leaders to cut back the spending on Zuma’s wives.
There is dispute about what is in fact paid for by taxpayers, with Zuma’s spokesman Mac Maharaj saying the presidency “provides reasonable administrative, logistical and other support...”
We find it healthy and encouraging that ANC leaders are questioning this largesse.
Whether the topic is even aired at next week’s policy conference remains to be seen.
It’s another challenge to Zuma’s leadership. His opponents have cleverly targeted a vulnerable zone.
