Smoke issue clouded
13 July 2012 | The Citizen
Amendments to the Tobacco Products Control Act will prohibit smoking in public places such as stadiums, outdoor restaurants, parking areas and beaches.
Particularly outspoken has been the Free Market Foundation, which this week organised a conference on the
matter.
We don’t like the way the government keeps tightening rules and seeking to limit the space in which citizens can exercise free choice. It is good to see some people fighting
to preserve that space.
There are also practical considerations such as the observation by the Township Liquor Traders’ Association that taverners will find it impossible to enforce the amendments. Lawyers pointed out there could be constitutional problems with the amendments. These and other valid points were raised at this week’s conference.
The foundation’s corporate members include British American Tobacco.
Does that influence the views propagated?
