There’s still plenty of time before the November US presidential election but the first TV debate between the two contenders has cleared up a few things.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney who, according to consensus, put up the best performance, gave the impression of being in command of the information expected of him on the night.

He also, for many, settled the question of whether he is a fit candidate.

If incumbent President Barack Obama took any comfort from the pre-debate polls, he will be feeling less at ease now.

There are still two presidential debates to come on October 16 and 22, and one between the vice-presidential hopefuls on October 11.

Excuses can be made for Obama’s “flat” presentation.

For example, he was vulnerable on his actual record  while Romney had the easier task of saying what he proposes to do.

Incumbency may also count against Obama in that he has become accustomed to people agreeing with him, while  Romney has honed his skills fending off rivals.

Obama will have to look sharper if he wants to keep his job.
