We all take our hats off to terrifying, bulgy men that spend more time at the gym than at home, while dancers are scoffed at for being softies. The “ Salsa With The Stars” initiative proved that unless you have been in someone’s shoes, you cannot judge them.

The event was multi-pronged in that it was used to promote healthy living habits, to raise funds for the development of future stars of the salsa/Latin/ballroom field and to expose celebrities and members of the public who have two left feet.

In George Orwell’s novel, 1984, such folk would have been regarded as freaks of nature, but luckily Kellogg’s Special K had planned remedial lessons.

Melrose Arch’s Piazza hosted a giant perspex marquee complete with a stage.

The night started off with professionals demonstrating how salsa should be done, then it was time for the guests to learn the basics. They were requested and sternly warned – just like K53 driving, which has its own hazards – keep a safe following distance as toes are regularly stepped on.

This is the part where one realises that it is not as easy as professionals make it look. If you can swing your hips like Shakira, maintain rhythm while counting the number of side steps and not take out your partner, then you can be proud.

Then there is the fitness side of the sport. Smokers’ worn-out lungs were tested while the ladies were happy that dance sport also represents the possibility of losing weight through sweating it all off.

Unfortunately, these forms of dance are expensive to be part of, which discourages the underprivileged, which is why the proceeds will be used to purchase clothing, shoes and other essentials for the needy who have a keen interest. They must show some talent too.

What was rather contradictory to the whole event were the eats that were served to guests.

Vetkoek stuffed with all sorts of meat, wraps lined with what tasted like fatty dressing, chicken skewers dipped in sauce and nachos are the furthest thing possible from healthy living.
