Mob ‘attack’ slammed by COPE PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 29 July 2010 20:52

JOHANNESBURG - Congress of the People (COPE) youth leader and member of Parliament Anele Mda has slammed those involved in an incident in which she was almost attacked.

“Wednesday’s incident has shown the great lengths that some people will go to in a bid to gain popularity. These people will go to the extent of threatening someone’s life to prove a point,” said Mda.

She was referring to an incident in which she and COPE deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa were mobbed outside the Western Cape High Court by a crowd believed to be supporters of the party’s president Mosiuoa Lekota.

Mda said the the drama unfolded when the court adjourned for lunch. She said she and Shilowa were walking out of court when they were blocked by a rowdy group who began blowing vuvuzelas.

“They also waved knobkerries in the air while blocking our way. It was an ugly sight. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy,” she said.

Mda was attending COPE’s latest court battle between Shilowa and Lekota.

Shilowa wants the court to interdict Lekota to prevent him from removing him as the party’s chief whip. He also does not want Lekota to become COPE’s new parliamentary leader after Mvume Dandala resigned from the position.
