UASA welcomes ANC Labour broker turnabout

JOHANNESBURG - Trade union Uasa on Wednesday said it was surprised that ANC members of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Labour did a complete turnabout on issues regarding labour brokers.

Although the United Association of SA was shocked by turnaround, it welcomed the move, said Uasa Chief Executive Leon Grobler.

“ANC labour committee members and labour unions have of late demanded an outright ban of labour brokers while business sought ways to regulate the industry,” said Grobler.

“According to media reports, the ANC is now willing to distinguish between good and bad labour brokers and to focus on preventing the abuse of workers by introducing amendments to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Employment Equity Act and the Labour Relations Act.”

The union said it always maintained this viewpoint and therefore welcomed the change.
