ANCYL ‘hires’ spy to dig up media dirt
CITIZEN REPORTER JOHANNESBURG - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has reportedly enlisted the services of an alleged criminal to spy on journalists and individuals who are perceived to be a threat. According to City Press, criminally charged former South African Revenue Service (Sars) employee, Michael Peega, is the league’s hired gun to dig up dirt on reporters. Peega apparently gets his intelligence through his connections in government departments. This comes on the hot heels of ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu trying to blackmail media into submission by threatening to release certain political journalists’ private information such as their financial status, salaries and sexual behaviours. Peega and a group of other former disgruntled government employees are said to have been responsible for compiling the so-called dossiers on enemies of the ruling party’s youth wing. The ANCYL embarked on the anti-media campaign after a series of revelations regarding the league’s president Julius Malema’s millions from government tenders. Speaking on Friday after receiving the 2009 Newsmaker of the Year Award, President Jacob Zuma came out strongly against spying on journalists. |
