7.5 percent fee increase for TUT

JOHANNESBURG - The Tshwane University of Technology council has approved a general tuition fee increase of 7.5 percent for next year, it said on Friday.

“From this, 6.5 percent will be applied for the tuition fee increase and one percent for bursaries for needy and deserving students,” spokeswoman Willa de Ruyter said in a statement.

The council and executive management committee had taken into account the economic challenges facing students and parents.

“We tried our level best to keep the increase as low as possible. Since TUT is also faced by financial realities such as external and internal inflation, the general tuition fee increase could not be avoided completely.”

TUT vice-chancellor and principal professor Errol Tyobeka said the increase was 1.5 percent lower than the nine percent for 2009.

There would also be a R700 hike in residence fees for the Pretoria and Soshanguve campuses and a R800 increase at the Ga-Rankuwa campus.

De Ruyter said the amount payable for registration remained at R1500 and the residence deposit R1200.
