Abuse continues despite national campaign

JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya, raised concern in Pretoria yesterday over the continued abuse of women and children in the country.
This despite claims that the 16 Days of Activism Campaign on No Violence against Women and Children had succeeded in raising awareness among citizens.
Speaking during the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign, believed to be the next best known event in the country after the State of the Nation Address, Mayende-Sibiya said the abuse of women and children continues.
“This disjuncture between the high level of awareness and persisting abuse is a cause for concern.
“The continued incidents of violence necessitate a review of the arrangements and programmes around fighting gender-based violence and child abuse that have been implemented over the past 10 years,” Mayende-Sibiya said.
On the issue of women raped at police stations, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa admitted there was a large problem in the system.
“Officers also need to feel the hand that polices them,” he said.
“They will be suspended and then fired if found guilty,” said Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, responding to reported incidents of rape at schools.
