Durban Derby is ‘sold out’
SISA MAJOLA
JOHANNESBURG - The first official match to be staged at Durban’s World Cup venue, the Moses Mabhida Stadium, has officially been sold out.
AmaZulu and Maritzburg United are due to stage a Premiership fixture there on Saturday afternoon.
The new stadium will seat 70 000 spectators in next year’s show piece – but only 22 000 tickets were made available for this first “trial match”.
“It is exciting to see that tickets managed to sell out four days before the game, something usually only associated with a Soweto derby that features Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs,” said AmaZulu’s communications officer Philani Mabaso.
“It shows the support that KwaZulu-Natal people are prepared to give and also a feel of how they will be supporting next year’s World Cup.”
It has been years since a KwaZulu-Natal derby has raised such interest, with Mabaso dating it back to Eighties when a match featuring Usuthu and Durban Bush Bucks used to raise strong interest in the league.
The city mayor, Obed Mlaba, is expected to open proceedings at the picturesque venue shortly before kick off.
AmaZulu and United are both busy mounting bids to escape the relegation danger zone in this campaign.
