‘Journalists need protection’

CEDRIC MBOYISA

JOHANNESBURG - The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) is calling for a “shield law” for journalists as protection from Section 205 (“reveal your sources”) of the Criminal Procedure Act.

“FXI is to launch an urgent request to the Law Reform Commission for the review and amendment of Section 205 of the Criminal Procedure Act and the introduction of a ‘shield law’, ” said the institute’s acting executive director Melissa Moore.

This was prompted by Section 205 subpoenas served on e.tv group news editor Ben Said and reporter Mpho Lakaje for a controversial broadcast which featured two self-confessed criminals threatening to terrorise tourists during the Fifa World Cup.

“Lack of the necessary protection of journalists’ sources has a chilling effect on the right to freedom of expression in that it stifles the dissemination of information to the public.”
