Mthethwa promises not to disrupt learning at KZN school
DURBAN - The police ministry has denied that a KwaZulu-Natal school visit by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa -- scheduled for Tuesday -- will disrupt learning at the institution.
“We will make sure that the function finishes before the start of learning. We will start at 7am and our function will not take more than 30 minutes,” said ministerial spokesman Zweli Mnisi on Monday.
Mthethwa is to visit KwaMbonambi Primary School for what has been billed part of his department’s campaign to encourage communities to avoid doing crime.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe recently criticised African National Congress Youth League leader Julius Malema’s school visits in Gauteng and North West.
“We cannot call upon teachers and learners to be at school on time and then want to address them during school time, it cannot work that way,” said Motlanthe.
“That is an excuse of people who want to disrupt learning and we should not tolerate that.
“No one regardless of their status, being a councillor or a president, must disrupt learning,” said Motlanthe.
Mthethwa would donate stationery to various disadvantaged schools in KwaMbonambi, the area where he grew up.
Mnisi said they had considered the issue of disrupting classes when they organised the event.
“No class will be disrupted. That is why we have decided to start early.”
