Bodies removed from KZN mortuary
DURBAN - Over 200 bodies were removed from the overcrowded Gail Street Mortuary in Durban and buried in paupers’ graves, the KwaZulu-Natal department of health said on Tuesday.
“All 212 bodies have been removed from the mortuary. A burial is our preferred method of body disposal, however circumstances compelled us to dispose of the bodies in paupers’ graves,” said MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo during an unannounced visit to the mortuary.
The Gail Street Mortuary made headlines last week after reports it was overcrowded and workers had threatened to down tools.
Some bodies had not been claimed since 2008.
Dhlomo intervened and formed a task team to assist with the problems.
During the visit, he said he was pleased the crisis had been resolved.
