Vuyo Mbuli’s family attacked

JOHANNESBURG – A blood-stained carpet in a room at a posh Houghton home showed how axe-wielding men attacked the father-in-law and domestic workers of television presenter Vuyo Mbuli.
“That’s my father-in-law’s blood,” said Mbuli.
Mbuli’s domestic workers Sphiwe Mhlanga and Caroline Mphande sat in a bedroom, silently looking up at the ceiling, trying to come to terms with their ordeal.
In the lounge, family members consoled the Morning Live presenter’s father-in-law Victor Dulabh, 74, who was sporting a heavily bandaged left eye.
The drama started at midday when three men rang the doorbell at Mbuli’s home and pretended to be workers sent to do repairs at the home.
Once inside, they grabbed the domestic workers, tied them up and started loading electronic equipment and jewellery into their car.
Dulabh, who was reading a newspaper, was unaware of the drama until they dragged him into a room and attacked him.
Mbuli’s wife, Savita, worried when she could not reach her father, alerted the police.
Mbuli’s house was also burgled in March but he does not believe his family is being targeted.
“Crime is about everyone. Everyone tells a story; everyone says something,” he says. “You can’t let these people determine your sense of where you are going or where we as a society are going.”
Mbuli was more worried about the welfare of his family than the theft of goods from his house. “Those are just things. It is the brutality of it all that leaves me numb.”
He and his domestic workers declined to be photographed.
