Zim police wrath hits church leaders

By XOLANI MBANJWA
JOHANNESBURG – Church leaders in Zimbabwe had not escaped the wrath of police harassment, and they were also being targeted, the SA Council of Churches said yesterday.
The SACC joined the growing chorus of criticism against the SA government’s silence over what it calls “the persecution of Zimbabweans at home and abroad”.
SACC general secretary Eddie Makue said: “The silence of the SA government is aggravating the situation. Our leaders must show they are committed to helping the people of Zimbabwe find rapid solutions to the many problems confronting them.
“In the last few days a number of church leaders have also been detained and beaten for participating in public prayer meetings.”
Makue said the massive migration of Zimbabweans to neighbouring countries was a clear indicator of the depth of the country’s turmoil.
“As a result the Zimbabwean situation threatens to destabilise the entire Southern African Development Community region.
“Political leaders in SADC have a responsibility to engage in actions that enhance peace and security for all people of the region”.
He said now was the time to act for peace in Zimbabwe. “History has shown the truth shall set us free. No matter how harsh the repression, a people who seek peace with justice cannot be deterred.”
