SA evils are ‘crime, Aids and no jobs’
By KIM HELFRICH
JOHANNESBURG – US ambassador to South Africa Eric Bost believes crime, HIV/Aids and unemployment are the biggest challenges facing the country.
Speaking at the Centre for International Political Studies in Pretoria last week he said HIV/Aids affected every aspect of life in South Africa, and this was one reason President Bush had decided to continue his country’s partnership with SA.
“Not addressing the health and sustainability of infected children compromises the future of South Africa,” Bost said.
On conflict resolution he said America shared SA’s commitment and supported it by providing training in peacekeeping.
“Although approaches may be different the end results in terms of peace and stability are the same.
“Presidents Bush and Mbeki have discussed what their countries can do to address conflicts in Africa. Both share the belief that together they can address issues currently manifesting themselves on the continent.”
He added the partnership between America and SA was in line with the shared goal of enhancing global security.
