Bhudu incarceration welcomed
CAPE TOWN – Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour has welcomed police action against prisoners’ rights activist Golden Miles Bhudu for wearing an orange prisoner’s overall in public.
Bhudu was briefly detained at Cape Town International Airport on Sunday evening after arriving off a flight from Johannesburg dressed in the overalls.
Police confiscated the overalls.
Balfour accused Bhudu in a statement on Tuesday of trying to “glorify the status and the wrong acts of offenders” and of “masquerading and personifying prisoners”.
“Wearing of offender or prisoners’ uniform in public places and gatherings should be condemned in the strongest possible way,” the Minister said.
“That orange uniform... is only worn by those sentenced prisoners and offenderŠsÆ who have wronged, maimed, raped and murdered people in families, communities and society at large.”
He said the Correctional Services Act made it illegal for anyone other than a prisoner to wear the uniform. –Sapa
