7/10 MOSES TAIWA MOLELEKWA – DARKNESS PASS (MELT) – With major influences such as John Cage and Steve Reich, the compositions of the late Moses Molelekwa might be expected to be inaccessible twiddlings way out of the listening range of the normal listener.
But all 10 of the tracks here (all called Darkness Pass, plus the relevant number) are lovely, moody pieces that will make you feel melancholic, joyful and content – often within the same tune. The fact that Molelekwa is no longer with us – he died in 2001 – enhances the mystery of his creations, as well as suggesting that SA would have had another giant of jazz on its hands had he survived. This isn’t only for jazz fans, although they may derive extra satisfaction. Because of its unity of tone, it would make a wonderful soundtrack to a suitable film. – BD
