No rape cover-up: Sun International

ALEISHA TISSEN

JOHANNESBURG - Sun City says there have not been any cases of rape in the past 12 years other than one alleged assault – this despite claims that there had been several this year alone.

“This is absolutely not true,” says Sue Klerck of Sun International.

The statement was made in response to a Citizen front page headline yesterday and its accompanying article titled: “Sun City rape hell”.

A response from Sun City management reads in part: “Sun International regrets the manner in which the alleged incident of rape at their Sun City resort was reported. The incident of rape is the only one reported over the past 12 years and is not one of a number of rapes as was incorrectly reported”.

The statement goes further to say that Sun International and Sun City management and security liaised with the victim’s family in making available any information on hand.

The alleged incident occurred on June 22 when a 20-year-old woman was allegedly raped by an unknown assailant on the resort’s premises.

Her mother approached The Citizen because she felt there had been a cover- up, a claim Klerck strongly refutes.

“We thoroughly investigated this case and there has definitely been no cover-up.”

Inspector Simon Motshegare, interim communications officer at Sun City police station said details on the progress of the case will be released once investigations are complete.

“We cannot comment on this case because it is still pending. We will release the information as soon as we have concluded our investigations.”

The statement received from Sun International says: “We understand the criminal investigation is on-going and the police are awaiting a more detailed statement from the victim to assist them. Sun City has at all times kept the family abreast as regards the information it had at it’s disposal”.

The victim’s mother said: “We were contacted by the Sun City police who will be interviewing my daughter again next week”.

This was NOT the only rape at Sun City. How dare they lie so blatantly! I know the girl & her family, & I know of other rapes. It is not just Sun City that continue to treat the victim like dirt, the Sun CIty Police and the nearby hospital are A DISGRACE AND SHOULD BE PROSECUTED.

This is not an alleged rape. I know the family and the girl who was raped. Sun City can try and swing their PR magic but fact is fact. This girl was raped and Sun City don't give a damn.

If this is not a cover up, then I dont know. I dont know where in Sun city this happened but I bet you there would be camera footage of this incident, but of course they would not release it if they were somehow implicated. I find if very sad that Sun International have such little regard for their patrons. I for one believe they should be sued and held liable for their lack of co-operation in trying to find the guilty party.

It seems that Sun City do not need to warn the public of any security issues (rape or death) ... because their little police station will always cover up for them. Do you think the police would ever jeopradise their "bonuses"...

As a Financial Advisor, it is always my duty to notify my clients of any possible dangers on the money market as well as all the risks, Even thought it leadS to smaller pay checks as I am commision based. I have to do it! I cannot beleive that Sun City (who earn millions of rands a day) cannot risk their earnings or image on notifying their patrons and the public, and trying to prevent this from happening again.

I would not be surprised if Sue told the victim to "take a shower" after she was raped "to prevent HIV"... Seems the Management of Sun City lack complete emotional intelligence...

Just received this correspondence by mail and am horrified that Sun City are acting proud of the fact that there have been "no rapes in 12 years other than one alleged assault"... ONE ASSAULT is enough! People are paying a fortune to visit the resort! And it seems the perpetrator has gotten away Scott free due to the lack of interest from Sun City or the Police. This means he is still hanging around and it is only a matter of time before it happens again.

Does Sue have any children? If her or her daughter were raped would she be happy with a response five months later "we are still investigating" or better still... "we are waiting for a more detailed statement". Only after the media attention it seems, did the police call the victim! What kind of people are we dealing with here!
