Football: Swazi women's team win 33-0

MBABANE - A Swazi women football team’s ambitious target of scoring 150 goals this season inched closer at the weekend after walloping a rival team 33-0 - a rate of one goal nearly every three minutes.

The team Imbabatane, named after a plant whose seeds cause itching, scored 16 goals against Inter-Ladies in the first half of the match played near the Swazi capital, before netting 17 more in the second half.

“During the run of play, one of my players was approached by the goalkeeper who pleaded with her that the goals were now more than enough so they should stop it,” said Imbabatane manager-coach Aaron Mavimbela.

“If it were not for compassion towards this new team we could have won 60-0. We did not want to scare other teams that we are still to play,” Mavimbela told AFP on Tuesday.

Imbabatane’s highest goal scorer was Fisiwe Hlophe who scored 14 goals, brining her most recent two match tally up to 20.
