ACDP on anti-Sexpo warpath
LAUREN PETERSEN
JOHANNESBURG - The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) is protesting against the annual Sexpo exhibition, held this year at the Cape Town International Conference Centre.
MP Cheryllyn Dudley said the party wished to sound warnings against pornographic fairs anywhere in South Africa and particularly in the Mother City.
The Sexual Offences Act had been ignored by lawmakers and the Advertising Standards Authority in Sexpo’s publicity, she said.
Dudley appealed to Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and Cape Town mayor Dan Plato for suitable restrictions on the “questionable” event and to seriously consider banning such events, which exposed children to great risk.
Event organiser Silas Howarth said the conference centre welcomed the different opinion offered by the party.
“We are secure in the knowledge that the protesters will respect the rights of the Sexpo and visitors at the event to have fun and enjoy an experience that celebrates the innate aspect of their humanity.”
He added that most of the Sexpo visitors were couples in committed relationships.
“There are workshops, non-stop entertainment and many other attractions designed to celebrate sensuality between committed couples,” said Howarth.
He invited any member of the Christian party to meet him and go on a guided tour.
