Alberton residents endure 48-hour blackout due to infrastructure failures

The Alberton Record has sent a query to the City of Ekurhuleni regarding the recent power outages that have impacted locals for at least 48 hours.

A recent power outage has left residents of Alberton grappling with darkness and inconveniences for over 48 hours, despite assurances from the local municipality that power disruptions would be a thing of the past.

The blackout, which began late on September 30, has raised serious concerns about the reliability of the area’s electrical infrastructure.

According to Ward 37 Clr Ivan Naidoo, the outage stemmed from equipment failure at the Z10 and Z9 substations during the process of restoring power.

“Our teams were working diligently to switch back on the supply, but unfortunately, the failure at these substations exacerbated the situation,” Naidoo stated.

In the absence of electricity, residents found themselves navigating a host of challenges, from spoiled food to disrupted daily routines.

Local businesses were also significantly impacted, with some closing temporarily and others operating at reduced capacity.

“It’s been tough for us. We are new to this business centre and we rely on our regular customers and without power, we can’t serve them. We just hope this gets resolved permanently,” said a local business.

The city, which previously pledged to enhance the reliability of power supply in the area, has not yet provided a detailed response regarding future preventive measures.

The Alberton Record has sent a query to local officials seeking clarification on what steps will be taken to avoid such outages in the future.

As residents await comment from the municipality, the experience has reignited calls for increased investment in infrastructure and better contingency planning.
