Benefit auction in aid of Norval Foundation

Strauss & Co is delighted to be collaborating with the Norval Foundation for the Norval Foundation Benefit Auction 2022.

The auction will assist the Foundation with connecting the public, including the many learners that we host, with the practices of leading artists from South Africa and the African diaspora. We are deeply grateful to the artists and businesses who have so generously donated to this auction.

“As we reflect on the past year, we’re proud of a number of achievements, including the recently opened exhibitions, Bonolo Kavula: Lewatle and A World of Illusions: Grada Kilomba, as well as When Rain Clouds Gather: Black South African Women Artists, 1940 – 2000, which opened in February. Equally, our Learning Centre has expanded greatly, welcoming over 6 000 learners in 2022 from across the metro area and offerring transportation, an educational tour and workshop, a snack and a copy of our Making Art History publication free of charge. For those who haven’t visited the Foundation recently, we converted our Shop into a Learning Centre to more effectively welcome learners.

Looking ahead to next year, we’re excited to be opening a survey exhibition of Berni Searle’s practice and an exhibition of the work of Maggie Laubser as she moved between Europe and South Africa. By the end of this year, we will be printing 20 000 copies of our Making Art History Volume 2 publication and distributing these publications over the course of 2023 to learners.

We continue to craft significant partnerships with other organisations, including Boschendal Wine Estate in the Winelands to share what we do with audiences across the region. Such collaborations allow us to extend our programming far beyond the Southern Suburbs, and I encourage you to follow us on our social media channels for more information about these collaborations and our artistic programming,” says Owen Martin, Director and Chief Curator of the Norval Foundation.

None of these exciting developments would be possible without a dynamic, dedicated team and engaged donors such as yourself. We urge you to support us by bidding on the lots included in this auction. Each and every bid is an investment into South Africa’s cultural sector and each contribution will go towards supporting our work. Once again, thank you to everyone who has contributed to this auction, including Airlink, Boschendal, Brett Murray, Cape Town Helicopters, De Grendel, Ellerman House, Everard Read, Goodman Gallery, La Cotte Farm, Louis Norval, Matetsi Victoria Falls, Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, Porseleinberg, Raats Family Wines, The Skotnes Restaurant, Steenberg Wine Estate, Strauss & Co, Stevenson, Vilafonté, William Kentridge, Zanele Muholi and the Norval Foundation’s Private Donors.

The auction will be held on Thursday, 8 December 2022 at 19:00. Bidding will take place in person, online and telephonically.
