National Oral Month
It’s NATIONAL ORAL MONTH everyone, and that means paying extra attention to your daily oral routine.
Gum disease ranks second, only to the common cold in terms of prevalence, with an estimated 90 per cent of South Africans experiencing this
problem at some point.
It really is in your best interest to practise good oral hygiene daily.
Not only does it ensure a simply beautiful smile, but it’s beneficial to your
health, as gum disease has been linked to coronary
heart disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes and diabetes.
New research even shows that women with gum disease
find it harder to conceive.
Try these tips to keep on top of your oral hygiene:
1. Brush twice daily for at least two minutes
2. Use floss or an interdental brush to remove food particles
stuck between teeth and gums
3. Change your toothbrush at least every two to three months
4. Visit your dentist every six months to make sure your teeth and
gums are healthy.
DID YOU KNOW?
Bleeding gums may be a sign of gum disease. It may also be due to serious medical conditions such as a blood disorder.
The most common cause is the build-up of plaque or tartar at the gum line that leads to gingivitis (inflamed gums).
If untreated, it may progress to periodontitis which distracts the gums, connective tissues and bone surrounding the teeth.
This may cause loose teeth and eventually loss of teeth.
Other causes:
• Incorrect brushing technique
• Hormonal changes
• Vitamin K deficiency
• Medicines e.g. blood thinners.
Visit a dentist for a check-up before the condition gets worse.
