Court grants final postponement in Mugabe and Matonhdze case
The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court has granted the state what it calls a final postponement to either finalise plea negotiations or head to trial in the matter involving Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and Tobias Tamirepi Matonhdze.
The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court has granted a final postponement in the case against Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and Tobias Tamirepi Matonhdze, who are facing multiple charges including attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The two men appeared briefly before magistrate Reiner Boshoff on March 24. During the proceedings, state prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri requested that the matter be postponed for further investigations. This came only a week after Maphiri had informed the court that discussions with the accused were nearing completion. Despite that earlier indication of progress, the prosecution returned to ask for more time.

Boshoff granted the request, setting April 17 as the next court date. He emphasised that this postponement would be the final one, giving both the prosecution and defence a deadline to resolve their negotiations.
Defence lawyer Sinenhlanhla Mnguni acknowledged that the parties have not yet reached agreement in their plea negotiations, despite having spent ample time in discussion with the prosecution. He explained that while progress has been made, minor but significant details continue to delay resolution.
Mnguni stressed that the defence had no objection to the postponement. He noted that they have allowed the state to continue with its investigations and will continue to act in the best interests of their clients.
The postponement means that Mugabe and Matonhdze will remain in custody for three additional weeks, after already spending over a month behind bars since their arrest. Mnguni said the defence is still hopeful that negotiations with the state can be finalised before the next court date. However, should talks fail, he noted that the matter will proceed based on the state’s completed investigation.

Throughout the process, Mnguni has maintained that the defence has engaged with the prosecution in good faith and expressed confidence that an eventual resolution will be reached. “I have no doubt whatsoever that we will ultimately find each other.” For now, the accused remain in custody, awaiting their next appearance on April 17.
