Gauteng police arrest over 770 wanted suspects during Operation Shanela 2

Gauteng police arrested suspects linked to serious crimes during a weekend blitz across the province. Operation Shanela 2 targeted fugitives involved in violent offences, resulting in significant arrests and increased community safety.

Hundreds of wanted suspects were arrested during Operation Shanela 2, a weekend crackdown led by Gauteng police aimed at apprehending individuals wanted for serious and violent crimes.

The operation, which ran from Friday to Sunday, October 10–12, covered all five districts in Gauteng. It was led by Major General Mbuso Khumalo, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection and acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing in Gauteng.

The arrested suspects face charges including murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery, rape, and sexual assault.

The breakdown of arrests by district is as follows:

* Tshwane: 255 suspects arrested
* Johannesburg: 196 suspects arrested
* Ekurhuleni: 137 suspects arrested
* Sedibeng and West Rand: 186 suspects arrested

Additionally, 265 suspects were arrested through roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, and compliance checks at liquor outlets across the province.

All suspects will appear in various magistrates’ courts in Gauteng in due course.

This operation forms part of the police’s ongoing efforts to reduce crime and enhance safety in communities across Gauteng.
