Easterns claim five-point victory over Sables

“Going into the lunch break, Sables were leading eight games to four and Easterns were all but out of the clash.”

Bowlers from the East and the West recently went head to head for the annual clash of the two districts.

Hosted in April the Eastern seniors hosted the Sables at the Edenvale Bowls Club.

Raymond Pieters, a committee member from Edenvale Bowling Club, explained that the Eastern Seniors comprise men’s bowlers over 60 years of age.

They hail from various clubs covering the Ekurhuleni Bowling District.

He said the Sables follows the same format but West of Johannesburg.

“For more than 20 years these two sides have clashed on a reciprocal basis,” said Pieters.

Each division was made up of 12 teams of four bowlers totaling 96 bowlers.

The competition is divided into two sessions.

Pieters said the pre-lunch session is a random draw of East vs Sables played over 18 ends.

The afternoon session, played over 15 ends, follows where winners face off against winners.

Each game is worth two points to the winners.

“This year the competition was as close as ever,” said Pieters.

“Going into the lunch break Sables were leading eight games to four and Easterns were all but out of the clash.”

Pieters said the Easterns were having none of that as at the end of play, the scores were tied at 24 games each.
Easterns were declared winners on shot average.

Pieters said a mere five points separated the two sides.

“The fantastic camaraderie between the East and West neighbours was fantastic. Sharing a cold one and swopping bowls stories after a hot day on the greens is something unique to bowls.”
