EMPD gears up for a safer festive season with additional resources

The metro has unveiled 68 new patrol vehicles as part of the campaign aimed at boosting visibility, preventing crime, and keeping roads safe across the city.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s EMPD has, on November 12, launched its Festive Season Safety Campaign where additional resources were unveiled to enhance the metro police’s capacity to prevent and respond to crime efficiently.

As part of the launch, the EMPD introduced a new fleet of 68 vehicles, including 50 VW Polos, 10 VW GTIs, and eight BMW motorbikes. The vehicles are meant to enhance the department’s visibility and operational efficiency across the metro.

The launch, held along Zuurfontein Road in Chloorkop, Kempton Park, was attended by Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety Sizakele Masuku, and senior officials from the department.

The campaign will focus on visible policing, crime prevention, and traffic law enforcement throughout the festive period.

Speaking at the event, Xhakaza emphasized that Ekurhuleni will not tolerate lawlessness, warning that those who engage in criminal activity will face firm consequences.

MMC of Community Safety Sizakele Masuku cautioned officers against any misuse of the new fleet, stressing that the vehicles are vital tools for protecting communities, nothing else.

Masuku cautioned officers against any misuse of the new fleet, stressing that the vehicles are vital tools for improving response times and public safety.

“This intervention could not have come at a better time, considering that crime levels tend to rise during the festive season,” said Masuku.

“As the EMPD, we have developed a plan to utilise these resources optimally so that our residents can enjoy a safer festive season and beyond.”

Masuku also appealed to motorists and pedestrians to adhere to road rules and prioritise safety to help reduce accidents during the busy holiday period.

She further urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any misuse of EMPD vehicles, reminding the public that these resources are strictly for law enforcement purposes.
