Holistic book looks at prevention of diabetes

New book, You can be sugar free- Indians vs Diabetes shows how one can help keep type two diabetes at bay.

A new book on the holistic prevention of Type 2 diabetes was launched at Suncoast Hotel Towers restaurant recently.

You can be Sugar Free- Indians vs Diabetes, is the new book by co-authors Kanchana Moodliar and Dr Colette Kell who believe while people may be predisposed to have diabetes, they are not necessarily predestined to have it.

The co-authors looked practically at culture, diet, race and lifestyle which were all important factors that predisposed diabetics.

Moodliar is a motivational speaker, yoga instructor and businesswoman who is also the project director for the Saris for Good Karma non profit company, whilst Kell is a homeopath and pathology lecturer at DUT where she is Head of the Anatomy Department.

Moodliar and Kell were happy to get their point across about living healthily. “Small lifestyle changes in diet and exercise are pertinent to keeping insulin resistance at bay,” said Moodliar.

An alarming statistic revealed at the launch was that there are about 34 million people living with HIV and about 270 million living with diabetes in the world. While the HIV research is high on the priority list, diabetes is only now starting to gain publicity.

Deena Naidoo, 2012 MasterChef cooked up a storm using the authentic Durban Fry’s range and everyone got a taste of the healthy low fat way of cooking, without losing flavour and taste. A pleasant surprise were the desserts which included muffins, scones and brownies all made with Hullett’s new Sugalite which is a low GI, sucrose free option.
