The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Services (DEMS) team were on site at Simmer and Jack Landfill site, extinguishing a fire that engulfed the facility on Sunday evening, May 15.
The facility will remain temporarily closed to the public, and patrons are advised to utilise nearby alternative mini dumpsites and landfill sites, such as the Weltevreden landfill site in Brakpan, Platkop near Heidelberg and Rietfontein landfill site in KwaThema until further notice.
No injuries or damages to property were reported. The fire gutted the waste body at the working face of the landfill site and the City’s officials worked to restrict the spread of the blaze.
The cause of fire is still under investigation.
